Chairman Beverly Massie replied that the school board is a policy making body and acts on the recommendations of the superintendent. Without information from the administration, the board has no way of learning about problem areas she said. Mrs. Massie added that the board reacted in the fall to a safety hazard brought to its attention by authorizing installation of “panic buttons" to turn off shop machinery in an emergency. She noted that the switches were in the process of being installed when Rene Ellis' accident occurred.
The shop is inspected for safety hazards by the school's insurance carrier, the state's labor department and officials from the state department of education, according to Superintendent Bloomer. If hazards aren't pointed out. "it’s difficult for me. as superintendent, to be aware of them," he said.
