Unexpected Money
School board member Newbill Miller reported that the county will also receive $22,000 from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, the state's offer for the school bus shop which will be taken by widening of Route 211. He suggested the money be earmarked as a cushion for construction bills.
The supervisors will also get back between $30,000 and $35,000 left over from the appropriation for school bus gasoline in the current budget, Robert Eastham pointed out. Added to the $22,000 from the bus shop condemnation, the money should cover any construction bills until reimbursement is received from the State Literary Fund, he said.
Eastham objected, however, to giving the supervisors an estimate for inclusion in the 1981-82 budget on what an expansion program for RCHS will cost. “There’s been no approval yet of any building program,” he emphasized. If such a program is eventually okayed. Eastham added, no one can estimate at this point what it will entail.
Luke asked how the school board had arrived at its decision to apply three per cent of salary toward hospitalization premiums for school employees, maintaining that this upped the teachers’ raise in the proposed budget to 19 per cent.
