Early Approval Requested
In conclusion, the superintendent asked the supervisors for approval of the teacher pay scale as early as possible to aid in recruitment. In addition, he said, current teachers are waiting to sign contracts for the coming year until they see what their salary and benefit package will be.
Sharon Kilpatrick, the single person attending the public hearing who wasn’t directly connected to the schools, asked the supervisors to add funds for four modular units to the proposed budget.
She suggested this as an alternative to “brick and mortar construction” since the school board is considering an expansion involving only three classrooms and guidance offices. The board’s tentative building plans don’t include replacements for the three existing classroom trailers or enlargement of the overcrowded library and cafeteria.
“It’s just a temporary patch-up to provide more classroom space. It won’t make the high school adequate," she said, questioning why the county should go into debt for 30 years to fund a totally inadequate high school construction program.
“I think we shotild just add modular units until the mood in the county changes.” Kilpatrick said.
Eastham countered that the board will not even consider expanding the cafeteria until the administration first tries three lunch periods as suggested to relieve overcrowding.
