stage for a showdown between two young men considered to be the state's top runners.

In a classic battle to the wire, John Brumback of Stonewall Jackson passed Fluvanna’s Collis Jackson with less than ten yards to go after Jackson had led by as much as 20 yards midway through the third mile.

Brumback broke the tape in 15:47.7, four seconds off the course record and threetenths of a second ahead of Jackson.

Rappahannock’s runners will compete this week in the state championships at Piedmont College in Charlottesville. The state meet also will offer a rematch between Jackson and Brumback for Virginia's cross country crown.
