Long ago there was a grist mill, a stave-making operation and possibly a distillery. The old mill had its own water system with pipes made out of wooden logs. There always had been some kind of a general store like the one the Pawleys bought from Captain Norman and christened Old Cash and Totem.
“There was more activity here when we first moved,” Helen chimed in. “There were more families here. The school bus went by our store and stopped for the children to run in for a snack.”
The little store is gone now, dismantled and carted away for materials. The face of the river crossroads was changed dramatically by the summer flood of 1979. Only part of the dressed rock foundation remains from the old mill. In the summer you can sometimes hear the voices of young people from the swimming hole at Roaring Rock. But often the crossroads are deserted and still, with only the rivers passing and the retired actors watching over it all from their little house on the bluff, still together after more than SO years of playing opposite each other in whatever drama life brings their way.
