Pawley had to beat out several other suitors to win his bride. Helen at that time was appearing in movies with a number of male stars and at least one had proposed: "Nelson Eddy was a good friend and we went out a great deal,” she said. “He wanted to get married but I preferred Ed.”
Helen pointed out that although she and Eddy saw each other a lot, they were very well-chaperoned. “Well, we both lived with our mothers,” she said. “When we went out we sometimes had not only my mother, but his with us too.”
The Pawleys stayed in Hollywood until 1942 when they returned to New York to star in a play that introduced a handsome new youngster—Gregory Peck. The Pawleys decided that they were Easterners after all and they stayed in New York
