was assigned to the 3rd Cavalry, presumably because he could ride a horse. His lieutenant fell off his mount and broke his arm; he was never seen again. A buddy from Norfolk couldn’t ride either, and was assigned to KP instead.
Cary recalls his unit had to make an all night march to the railhead to catch the train to the front. It rained that entire night, and three men died later of pneumonia.
After the war, Cary served in the Army of Occupation until the end of August 1919.
Since there were few duties assigned to him, Cary volunteered to drive a truck and spent many days and nights on the road hauling ice cream and moving picture machines to troops stationed in little German villages up and down the Rhine.
