Cary was born October 20, 1891, in Warrenton, but his parents moved to Rappahannock when he was S to take over the farm which had been in his mother’s family for generations.
Cary joined the Culpeper Minute Men at an early age, but his three-year enlistment was over before, the Mexican revolution heated up, so he stayed at home while many of his buddies went south to check on Pancho Villa.
However, when the U. S. declared war on the Kaiser, Cary joined the army on May 24, 1918, and two months to the day later, landed in Brest, France.
The crossing took 11 days from Norfolk, he recollects, and from the decks of the “Italian cattle boat” Duca d’Asta, he could see the Navy escort ship fire at something, but nobody told him whether it was an enemy submarine or not. The 2,600 men aboard
