and overtime hours. The second snow added another $40,000 to that figure.
Local markets found themselves running out of staple items, as nearby residents rushed to stock up on bread, milk, eggs and other basic foods. Wholesalers had difficulty resupplying some of the markets because of the hazardous road conditions caused by the second storm last weekend.
Mail delivery was held up last Friday and Saturday when the Postal Service pulled its trucks off the roads, and no mail reached local post offices from the distribution centers.
Sheriff John Henry Woodward said that his department had no problems stemming from the storm. “It stranded everybody. There’s no problems - nobody’s moving.”
Local fire and rescue companies ran very few calls last weekend. All the county’s companies had fitted their apparatus with chains, but fortunately, with few exceptions, their services were not requested. The calls which were handled required extreme caution, since the secondary roads which had been cleared were still hazardous. Other roads were nearly impassable because of the accumulation.
State police reported no major accidents in the county. Most of the calls handled by Rappahannock’s troopers involved fender benders, automobiles which had slid off the roadways and abandoned vehicles.
First Sgt. G. H. Gregory said that “the public should be commended for using good judgement in staying off the highways, and for using caution in travelling when it was necessary.”
Sgt. Gregory added that both motorists and pedestrians should be aware that hazardous road conditions are still very much a problem. He noted that just because the pavement is dry, motorists should not as-.
