"Our music has always had a very strong sense of melody and texture,” explained Paul Reisler, the group’s founder. “We love to play with the way different sounds blend together. The addition of keyboards and percussion makes the rhythmic element much more powerful. The rhythm really propels the music now.”
Trapezoid will be bringing this newest of the new acoustical sound to the Gay Street Theater in Washington on Sunday, Feb. 8, for a concert sponsored by the Rappahannock Association of the Arts and the Community.
And to add yet another new twist, the group will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy. A popular hsession and sideman, Levy has worked regularly with such diverse artists as Claudia Schmidt, John Prine, Tito Puente, Steve Goodman and John McCutcheon. A master of harmonica and piano, he can play a roomful of other instruments in every imaginable musical style.
“The best all-around musician I have ever played with,” says Jethro Burns from the legendary duo of Homer and Jethro.
Levy has recorded with Trapezoid on many of the cuts from the group’s five'albums, but live performances together are rare. “The most t exciting concerts we have ever given have all been with Howard,” said Reisler. “His incredible versatility and virtuosity coupled with his sense of surprise inspires the best from all Of U8.”
Some groups can play an Irish jig and then a Japanese lullaby and sound like two different bands. Trapezoid takes a traditional song - be it from Ireland, the Orient, South America or the hills of West Virginia - and makes it their own. “When we learn a song we like, we sit around and play it a lot. We change things, sometimes even melodies and harmonies,” explained Reisler. “Consequently, all the songs have a particular sound that’s ours.”
