When Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar, a tremor shook the music world. Registering only slightly less on the Richter Scale — and in the Washington metropolitan area, maybe even higher - was the recent announcement that Trapezoid had added keyboards and percussion.
A change in an institution is always news, and Trapezoid, called “the finest folk ensemble in America today” by The Washington Post, has become an institution to fans of traditional music. But don’t worry, Zoids (as the group’s loyal followers are dubbed), this is still a traditional band. The tunes are livelier, bounder, more up-tempo, but they remain the delightful meld of blues and bluegrass, African tribal chants and Appalachian moonshine music, high flown poetic imagery and down home wails of heartbreak.
