The right stuff
Once again, adversity brought out the best in our community.
This past week’s snowstorms, though they brought the county to a virtual standstill, showed there’s no shortage of community spirit in Rappahannock. It seemed like wherever we looked there were people helping their neighbors.
Everyone, from the highway department employees, who worked around the clock all weekend to keep the county’s roads passable, to the farmers who plowed their own driveways, and then several of their neighbors’, and then some of the highway crossovers, to the town residents who, after shoveling out their own cars, walked down the block to lend a hand to their neighbor, seemed to have time to help one another.
We’re sure that almost everyone who lives on one of the snowbound secondary roads had at least one neighbor who stopped by in their four-wheel drive vehicle “just to see if you need anything from the store.” Many of those with four-wheel drives made a special effort to check on sick or elderly neighbors. They volunteered their time and vehicles to local hospitals.
It is true, indeed, that there is nothing like an emergency situation to measure the character of an individual - or of a community.
Without a doubt, the people of Rappahannock passed this past week’s test with flying colors.
