To the editor.
From all indications, voters will finally get a chance to decide this November on whether or not they want a lottery in Virginia. A referendum bill got through committee on Wednesday for the first time in six years and could be brought before the full House for a vote as early as next week.
It’s no secret that many Virginians have been playing the lottery in neighboring states for a long time. It’s time the voters had a chance to decide for themselves if they want one in Virginia. Let’s keep that money home where it belongs.
Every year we get our share of nanny bills - that is, legislation that tries to mandate plain common sense. Wearing blaze orange is not going to stop people from handling guns recklessly and it won’t completely stop accidental shootings. Instead, what we very much need is to remove from the hunting field entirely,
as well as vigorously prosecute, all hunters who carelessly disregard the safety of others and cause dangerous shooting accidents.
