Course ready
for spring 'chase

Steeplechasing action moves south to Rappahannock this Saturday, March 3, where nine races mark the day’s card at James W. Fletcher’s Thorton Hill Farm on U.S. 522 east of Sperryville.
“The course is in" excellent shape. It was dragged last week before the rain, though it’s frozen now,” said race chairman Oliver Brown Monday.
“I have no doubts it’ll be 60 degrees and sunny Saturday,” he added.
A warm rain expected Wednesday won’t hurt the going, according to Brown, who said the hilly course drains well.
Ponies large and small race first at noon, galloping on the flat for two-thirds of a mile. Expect to see juniors Melanie Bartenstein, Amy Gable, Jennings Carney, Charlie Conaway, Ann DeMichele and Kevin Selby compete against last year’s winners Meleksha David and Casey Hinsdale.
Open timber, ladies’ timber, maiden and open hurdle follow, with foxhunters jumping in the seventh race and timber owner-riders the eighth.
Slated for open timber are Imperial Morn with Bay Cockbum, who is also on Ronnie Lee, Solo Orbit with Juliet Graham and Crab Apple with Dawn Dugan, both of whom might opt for ladies timber, Tougher Still with George Lee, Stag with Speedy Smithwick, Young Rodney with David Bourke and Cotuit with Brooks Durkee.
