A prominent official has characterized agriculture here as a failure. This is probably a matter of opinion at best, but it may be a generally prevailing viewpoint; so it is worthwhile examining.
After all, if agriculture is a big factor in our local economy, the truth or otherwise of these sentiments is pretty relevant to the livelihoods of a lot of people. The facts are not difficult to come by, especially from “Virginia Agricultural Statistics, 1988”, an official state publication.
