To the editor:
There are, according to Kermit Weakley, 251 inhabitants of Washington, “if they are all home.”
I have no source for a similar estimate of the number of county residents. Suppose, however, that a reasonable estimate is 6,300 and don’t worry about whether they are ever all at home because they are not.
That means that the Town of Washington accounts for four percent of the county population. But of late they have been getting virtually all of your “letter to the editor” space and a disproportionate amount of your news space.
Don’t you know that there are scandals, gossip, backbiting and other wonderful diversions in the rest of the county?
For example, right here in Tiger Valley, I was told that since I once paid taxes to the District of Columbia government (I don’t know how they knew), I am not fit for office. I refuse to resign from the Lions, however. If they won’t have me, who will? And besides, it was all legal.
I have also been accused of having an interest in the Inn. I don’t know why; my accusers are shadowy. But perhaps it is that I have been trying to grow more raspberries, albeit unsuccessfully, than my family can eat. The Inn does make a fine raspberry sauce.
Over in Amissville, people have been throwing garbage in their own back-yard. I have been told that even their supervisor, Mr. Bingham, has been seen doing it.
