I have been meaning to thank Rappahannock County Elementary School for their implementation of a developmental curriculum in the Kindergarten this year. Your article on the subject last week reminded me to do something about that.

I have a daughter in Geraldine Payne’s class this year, and I am seeing great things happen there. I know that the developmental program has been quite a change for some of the teachers, but it has been well worth the effort to get it started. Thank you to all who have been involved.

I have a concern to voice as well. It is the recommendation of The Virginia Department of Education that schools use developmentally appropriate practices through the third grade. Now that this year’s kindergarteners have been introduced to these educational practices, I feel it is not only desireable, but necessary to maintain continuity by offering the same educational environment for them next year. It is my hope that the school intends to carry through with this positive action by implementing a developmental program for first grade next year.
