High school sophomore Jim Clark and elementary student Brady Wolfe carried off the top prizes in the Science Fair last week. • Jim’s project is a continuation of one he started last year and carried to the International Science Fair in Mississippi last summer.
He used a computer to solve the "Traveling Salesman Problem” where the problem is to find the shortest distance between several cities returning to the starting point.
Then Jim used the computer to predict how someone working on the problem would attempt to solve it. Last year he used paper and pencil to’test his subjects, high school students and teachers.
This year his father’s coworkers at a branch of The Analytic Sciences Cofp. in Reston, served as test subjects. He used more problems and found the computer “predicts better this year.”
Jim used a Macintosh Quadro computer he has at home with Symantec C 6.0 to write the program.
;Brady Wolfe’s project was testingwhether the claim on Crisco ads that it makes a moister, softer cookie than butter was supported by several tests.
• He baked batches of peanut butter cookies using Crisco, Wesson Oil Vegetable Shortening, margarine anthbutter.
;As a test of moistness he baked four cookies from each batch further for four hours at 200 degrees drying the cookies out. The difference between their weight after regular baking and after the second baking would be the moisture in the regular cookies. - Crisco’s claim held up in this test, he said, since cookies baked with Crisco lost 3.7 grams and cookies baked with butter lost 3 grams. However, cookies baked with margarine lost 5 grams and those baked with Wesson oil lost 4.2 grams.
Brady did two further tests on the cookies to measure softness. He picked two morejrwh each batch and dropped a 200 gram weight on them from four inches above the cookies- to measure the indentation it left.. The weight produced a 3/16 inch indent in the cookies baked with Crisco and only 1/8 inch for the other three varieties, but both of the cookies baked with Crisco cracked as did one of the cookies baked with Wesson oil. None of the cookies baked with butter or margarine broke.
A further test dropping two other cookies in each batch from 15 inches produced similar results with both cookies baked with Crisco Breaking and also one baked with margarine. None of the other coo
