Though Mr. Fisher is not an ordained minister, he has preached in 11 churches, of several denominations, since he left his home in Beaumont, Texas on Aug. 9. He said, “I am just an old construction worker.”
A friend of Mr. Fisher’s is accompanying him along the way, with a blue Toyota which holds their clothing and food. His friend also carries the cross part of the way, when Mr. Fisher needs a break to rest or eat. “The cross goes all the way on foot, though,” said Mr. Fisher.
In Arkansas, Mr. Fisher met with the lieutenant governor and his -assistant, and supposedly they have passed on the word to President Clinton that he is on his way.
At the end of his message to the president, Mr. Fisher says, “What will you do with me and what will I do with you?”
