in the 23-mile section from the Town of Madison north to Sperryville. Civic organizations and individual business owners recently conducted a successful campaign to retain the designation.

Their opponents objected to federal restrictions which prohibit offpremise signs and billboards on federally-funded primary routes that are scenic byways.

The support shown by the Madison Merchants Associaiton, the Chamber of Commerce and other groups such as the Madison Garden Club resulted in a majority vote by the Madison County Baord of Supervisors in favor of leaving the scenic byway designation in place.
