Now that telephone customers with 937 and 547 numbers in Rappahannock can call locally to five counties and customers with 987 and 675 numbers can call most of two counties, what about the people around Huntly, Chester Gap and Flint Hill. They still can’t call each other locally, even though they’re on the same phone company.
One aim of the petition for expanded service between Washington and Culpeper numbers was to remove the toll barrier in the middle of Rappahannock between two different phone companies.
With that accomplished now is the time for 635 and 675 customers to really put the pressure on Centel to explain how they can justify having a toll barrier between two of their own exchanges five miles inside the county line.
The Centel manager in Charlottesville has told me they are “looking” at the situation, but they’ll continue to wait until there is more demand from their customers. Personally, I don’t make all that many calls to Front Royal numbers, but I think Huntly, Chester Gap and Flint Hill customers should not wait for Centel to do something on their own. Also you may want to express yourself to the State Corporation Commission in Richmond. Call 1-800-552-7945 ask for Communications Department then ask for Alan Wickem. If enough concerned people contact these people repeatedly until you have their attention, something can be done. Even though our politicians haven’t bothered to get involved so far, they could affect this effort by excercising their francise power over the phone company. See State of Virginia Code 56-235, 56-241, 56-481, 56-484 and 56-478.1 hope enough telephone customers are fed up with paying too much to call up the road that they will continue to put pressure on the powers that be. Good luck. I wonder, is the county supervisors for Wakefield District concerned enought to do something? Is he up for re-election soon?
