Volunteers and others associated with the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League (RAWL) vigorously supported the organization’s request for an increase from S775 per month to take care of the dogs in the animal shelter to $1,250 per month before the Board of Supervisors at the Board of Supervisors budget work session last Wednesday.
RAWL loses money on each dog that comes through the shelter, Lisa Reid, RAWL’s president, said. To make that up they do lots of fundraising.
She said 98 percent of the dogs are adopted outside the county, RAWL volunteers take nine to 14 dogs to a pet supply store in Fairfax each Saturday. Adopting families pay $100 to adopt a dog, but it has cost an average of $137.50 for each dog, Ms. Reid said. All dogs are neutered before they are available for adoption, she added. Many arrive at the shelter malnourished and needing worming and treatment for mange.
