Gary Settle says his goals if he is elected Sheriff in November are to be available to the people of Rappahannock County, to work on reducing drug use, and to emphasize training for members of the department.
He said he decided to seek the office earlier this month after considering the likelihood he would be assigned by the State Police away from his family again and wondering “why couldn’t I be providing this service to Rappahannock County.” He has just completed a 10-month course for administrators while serving as a supervisor in Culpeper for Culpeper and Madison counties. Before that he was in southwest Virginia. “You don't realize how much you miss home until you’re gone,” he said.
Sgt. Settle resigned from the State Police at the end of May to seek the Sherriffs Office. He had been with the state police for nine years. Before that he was a deputy with the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office starting in 1984.
A graduate of Rappahannock County High School, Sgt. Settle attended George Mason University. While there he started taking some law enforcement classes and decided to give it a try. After 11 years in law enforcement, he said he would like to eventually finish work on his
