Ron Makela will seek the Jackson District seat on the School Board. Current member Beverly Massie, who also serves as the board’s chairman, will not be running.
Mr. Makela and his wife Jan run Hackley's Store in Amissville. They have one son who is a kindergarten student at the elementary school. Mr. Makela is a member of the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department.
He has been attending School Board meetings and educating himself on school issues and the budget process. He said he is surprised more School Board candidates have not been attending the meetings to learn more about the school system and the board.
Prior to moving into the county he lived in Virginia Beach where he worked as a fireman. He was bom in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and attended Michigan State University. As a result of his employment in Virginia Beach he was able to take a number of management courses he feels will help him on the county’s School Board.
While they were living in Virginia Beach, Mrs. Makela taught Chapter One classes in the Virginia Beach school system. She was born and raised in Rappahannock County.
Mr. Makela was active in local, regional and then citywide civic associations in Virginia Beach. He was president of the Virginia Beach Civic Association and a member of the mayor’s Committee • on Education for the Year 2000. He said the committee spent one and a half years looking at the Virginia Beach school system and gathered “a lot of information.” However, that experience convinced him to leave Virginia Beach before their son started school. Ad Awards
Ann Brown and Barbara C. Wavland won two merit awards from the Virginia Press Association for ads appearing in the Rappahannock News during 1994. Both awards were for promotional/multiple advertiser ads in color.
Margaret Bemtson joined them in the merit award for an ad for Mother’s Day Dining, and Maria Nicklen joined them in the merit award for an ad for Valentine Dining.
