The first time I heard Roger Miller sing, 1 believe the title was “No Thanks, Omaha, Thanks Lots.” It seems that he was a country singer in a small town radio show, and a big station in Omaha had offered him this better job, expenses and a car.
The memorable line was, “I get credit at the grocery store and my barber tells me jokes, no thanks, Omaha, thanks lots.” The point was that he was so well known and liked in his little country town he was not about to be uprooted. It could not get any better.
He was accepted and liked by the community which was tied together by the country store.
We, here in Rappahannock County must keep our stores the way they are and shun the big time convenience franchises with their “7 to 11” cold efficiency twentyfour hours a day.
