Mr. Massie said, “I would like to leave it like it is and let the theater group use it.”
Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes said, “I would like to know if the building is worth thinking about.”
“What choice do we have?” Mr. Massie asked.
“It may be cheaper to tear it down,” Mr. Estes said.
Chairman Hubert Gilkey said, “If we tear it down, we would have to put something back that looks the same.”
Mr. Massie said he would go along with the plans to hire an architect to assess the building if the amount could be reduced. Mr. McCarthy said he would consult with an architect about the cost.
When the supervisors got to the budget for social services, Mr. McCarthy said, “I cannot pretend to tell you what effect (Welfare reform) will hive.” He said the main question is what will be expected of the county for those who cannot find jobs in the private sector.
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said the governor had selected PD9 because it is not heavily populated and has people in a wide variety of circumstances. “He can sit back and see what happens.”
Mr. Massie asked, “Is it possible the governor mandated a public works program funded by the county?”
Mr. McCarthy said he did not know, but local social services director Beverly Leathers would come to the supervisors August meeting to tell them “what the state is saying at that point.” The program is to begin July
