Currently the state requires a battery of tests in fourth, eighth and eleventh grades. In addition the Literacy Passport test is required in sixth grade. The. Rappahannock school system pays to have standardized tests administered to ofher grades, but only reading and math are tested for those grades.
The standardized tests given to fourth, eighth and eleventh grade students in Virginia, as well as the others given to Rappahannock students in other grades, are “norm referenced” tests. In other words students are compared to a wide national sampling. The Literacy Passport tests are “criterion referenced,” meaning that a student must have a certain score to “pass.”
The state proposes to have tests ready by next spring geared to the new standards of learning that will be both norm referenced and criterion referenced and that will be given in third, fifth, eighth and eleventh grade with the test used as a barrier to graduation for those who' do not pass in eleventh grade.
Dr. Gangel said he doubted these tests would be ready for use in all Virginia schools by next spring. He said he feels there is not enough ‘money or time to develop tests for (four grade levels, but he expects to see some new tests piloted in Virginia schools next spring.
