Who will win if the minimum wage goes up? Organized labor hopes to by using wage pressure created by the increase and higher prices to try to organize more dues-paying members and to stop its long* slide from representing 35 percent of the private work force in 1945 to less than 10 percent today. It’s no accident that Clinton and Congressional Democrats raised the minimum wage issue, long pushed by the unions, immediately following an announcement that the AFL-CIO was pledging $35 million in “voter education” funds (Translation: Money to elect Democrats) during 1996 political campaigns. Of course, that timing could be coincidental, but, until the money was promised, the administration (except for Reich) failed to make any effort to increase the minimum wage, despite a Democrat controlled Congress during Clinton’s first two years in office.
