The changeover from having to call the fire departments or rescue squads for emergencies, to calling 911 and having to tell a dispatcher how to get to your house, to calling 911 and having the dispatcher know how to direct companies to your house has been much smoother in Rappahannock County than in most of the surrounding jurisdictions.
There were some squabbles about road names, and the dispatch system is having to cope with a lack of cooperation from Bell Atlantic in Culpeper, but all in all the transition has been fairly easy.
That is certainly not true in Culpeper where there are continuing jurisdictional battles between the Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Culpeper about the location of the dispatching office.
Culpeper’s troubles might be a source of amusement in Rappahannock County if Bell Atlantic was not using it as an excuse not to provide full E-911 service to their Rappahannock customers with Culpeper telephone numbers. ' Even more amazing Bell Atlantic still has not fully switched Sperryville customers on the 987 exchange. The company claims it needs to have 90 percent of their customers request the change. ; Fortunately the dispatch center is able to use a caller ID system to produce almost the same results, although the dispatcher has to key in the telephone number to get full information up on the computer screen. With full E-911 that would not be necessary. ' Bell Atlantic customers need to besiege the company with requests for full E-911 service in Rappahannock County, and those \yho do not yet have house numbers on their houses or on the post office box or a post at the end of their driveways should get those numbers up.
