to take five children shopping, and to see if the program would fly. "I went out of town a few days and came back and they had 25 kids," he said.
Major Rick MacWelch said that when the cash registers were tallying up what was purchased by the kids, if something showed up at a sale price that they didn't know about, the deputy would run back into the store and get more stuff.
While the children had breakfast at McDonald’s in Warrenton, all of their presents were brought back to the courthouse and wrapped by a large group of willing volunteers, well equipped with wrapping paper, ribbons and tape.
When the children returned to 'Washington, they had Polaroids photos taken with Santa in his sleigh behind the Sheriffs Office, and each family was presented with a box of food including a turkey, canned ham, vegetables and other goodies.
Major MacWelch said that Sheriffs Office personnel doubled up on shifts. Some came in ehrly to allow midnight people to go earlier, he said.
"The public has given us such tremendous support. I don't think it could have turned out any better," said Capt. Brown.
