The law requires you to list the Social Security number on your tax return for each dependent bom before November I, 1996, being claimed on your 1996 tax • return. Remember, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) wilj not process a return without the correct Social Security numbers for dependents.
If you're already getting Social Security benefits and you moved this year, make sure we have your new address. (Sometimes people who have their checks sent directly to their bank forget to tell us about a change in their mailing address.)
You must notify the post office and Social Security immediately if you change your mailing address. In fact, failure to report a change of address is the leading cause of checks not arriving on time. Your report should include your claim number, your old address, and the new address, including ZIP code.
