Have you ever paid a bill late and incurred a late fee simply because you forgot to drop it in the mailbox on time? It's easy to forget. So, with the end of the year fast approaching, I \yant to remind you that there are certain Social Security-related matters that you should tell us about, you don't have to run to the mailbox. Just call (800) 772-1213 and let us know.
If you changed your name this year (through marriage, divorce, or any other reason), make sure your new name is listed on your Social Security card and in Social Security's records. If you don't do this, we may have problems posting your earnings to Social Security's files. (This could reduce your future Social Security benefits.) Also, the Internal Revenue Service may have problems processing your tax return.
To get a replacement card, you usually need one identifying document. To change the name on your card, you need documentation that shows your old name and your new name.
