way up and around the tree. On reaching the part of the tree trunk where the branches begin to thrust themselves out, the creeper flies to the base of another tree and starts all over again. In this way all the tree trunks within a given area are covered.
Don’t expect to see this bird here in summer unless you live at high elevation where they breed and build a nest under an overhanging piece of bark. The Brown Creeper migrates from its breeding grounds in the New England states and eastern Canada to spend the winter here in the Virginia Piedmont.
Never common, small and shy and mostly silent, this bird is well worth a search. It is my guess that the lady with the request for information at Airlie had seen this little bird on a regular basis at or near her feeder.
To my dismay, I have not seen a Brown Creeper in the yard here in Flint Hill. On occasion, when I have been wandering in the woods of Rappahannock County, a small movement has caught my eye. The movement has been a creeper as it silently landed at the base of a tree trunk to start its circular journey upward. If the bird made a sound at all it was a short, sibilant see?, sounding much like a question.
