Although the volleyball teams got off to a rocky start against Page County last week, the coaches feel things are definitely looking up. The varsity won impressively against Clarke County Monday in two games, 15/10 and 15/3.
“I see them improve with each game,” said coach Laura Conklin. “They are working together now and learning to play as a team. They’re really playing pretty well now.”
“Alice Gentry is a leader on the court and plays with her heart — that makes a big difference,” Conklin said, adding that Gentry had an exceptional game against Clarke.
Conklin said she was disappointed in the team after their loss to Page County because they were “definitely not playing up to their potential. They did not play well at all.”
Against Strasburg last week the team played well and were “much more like the team I see in practice,” Conklin said. The games were much closer, they lost 9/15, 15/11, 9/15.
Junior varsity coach Heidi Maeyer said the JV team’s movement on the court is better now but they need to get rid of the nerves and settle down.
The JV came out well against Page, winning the first game 16/14 but lost the second and third games, 10/15 and 13/15. “I thought they played very well for their first game and considering the fact that only two girls on the team had played before in games,” Maeyer said.
