Massie is in his third term as Hampton District supervisor. He first ran in 1988, defeating Lee Bird in a close race. Since then, he has run unopposed.
The supervisor’s job
Massie said he spends between five and 40 hours a week at the job, and more at budget time in the spring.
He added it is important for a candidate to view the job of supervisor as community service rather than a position of power.
“Comq^Knity service is the bottom line. It is like working for fire and rescue or the library to make Rappahannock a better place. People serve in different ways,” he said.
