Many people, for example, think the over-the-counter bulletin board market is the same as the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq when actually OTC-BBs are not well regulated and don’t have to meet the same requirements.
Because of the Internet’s virtual nature, you never really know whom you’re dealing with. That makes it easy for “fraudsters” to do their dirty work, the SEC said.
Scams range from off-shore fraud and the classic pyramid to “risk-free” promotions and, perhaps the most common, the “pump and dump.” With the pump and dump, you may see messages posted from someone who claims “insider” status and who urges you to buy or sell shares in a certain company. Actually, the stock touter may be so inside that he or she is paid to promote the stock and buy up shares to make it seem as if they’re gaining value. Once they sell the shares and turn off the hype, gullible investors are left with nothing.
