4. The folly of “I’m a conservative investor:” It’s funny that, no matter what a person’s political leanings, everyone claims to be a “conservative” with his or her own money.
Stock brokers hear it all the time: “I want to invest in something safe.” Investing in something safe is a surefire guaranteed way to not make any money. There are risks and there are rewards to investing. Normally the greater risks one is willing to take, the greater possible rewards.
There’s a line in there that combines the right amount of risk for each investor. Find yours and stick with it. You want to be able to sleep at night, but you also want to earn a decent profit. Which leads to:
3. Investing is for the long term: So is death. But what they mean is that over the course of history, the stock market has consistently out-performed any other form of investment. But you and I live in the here-and-now, and we can’t afford to just blindly throw our money at the market because of some century-long statistics.
The market goes up, the market goes down. It gets too high, it gets too low. It always has and it always will.
