A music lover, he plays the piano and the guitar. His guitar was propped in the comer of the office, and he said he plays it when he has a break.
However, he said his passion is biking, and he frequently hitches his bike to his car so he can go for a ride during his lunch break.

He lives in Warrenton with his wife, Susan Hotelling, and two children, seven-year-old Ian and 12-year-old Christina. Susan is a social worker for home health service associated with Fauquier Hospital.
As the fourth child in a family of ten children, he said that growing up, “If the girls were upset about anything, I was outnumbered. My seven sisters had it all over me.”
He added until he was 14 he thought his mother’s pregnancy was an automatic state. “I didn’t know you even needed a father. My poor dad was working constantly.”
He grew up in Westfield, N.J., a suburb of New York City and graduated from New York University as a physical therapist. He worked for a year when he decided to become a doctor.
In 1979 he graduated from Rutgers Medical School and went into the U. S. Air Force to pay them back for financing his medical school education.
