you did on the Song Sparrow,” said my good friend Mary Jamison of Sperryville when met at coffee hour after church on a recent Sunday. “Now I’m straightening out the sparrows at my bird feeder.” Add to that a letter I just received from Peggy Mitchell of Marshall, who wrote, “We are blessed with one beautiful Fox Sparrow.” Because of these comments, I am inspired to write more about winter sparrows.
Though we haven’t seen a Fox Sparrow, Lee and I were delighted with two new species that arrived at our feeder with the January snow.
The first, the Whitecrowned Sparrows. This is an elegant and aristocratic bird. They have vivid black and white stripes on their heads, clear, unstreaked breast and carry themselves in an upright posture that declares their handsome aspect.
