There are several large caterpillars that occur at this time of year. Most are green and may reach four inches or more in length. They are the larval stages of giant moths such as the royal walnut moth, the polyphemus moth and the luna moth. These caterpillars almost never cause any feeding damage.
They are usually found walking across the lawn or driveway as they look for a place to pupate. They will overwinter as cocoons and emerge as moths next summer. The largest and most bizarre of the large caterpillars is the hickory devil which may reach over five inches in length. It has large orange horns and looks quite fearsome, but is completely harmless. It turns into the royal walnut moth.
Quite a few people have encountered stinging caterpillars in recent weeks. There are several species that occur at this time of year.
