This letter is in response to the
"Amissville Values" report offered by the Amissville Area Community Association and also to the editorial of Aug. 23 regarding the outcome of the "Amissville Survey." The group is to be commended upon taking on the task of preparing and collecting a survey to collect the opinions of Amissville residents; however, the broad generalizations expressed in the report are extremely difficult to substantiate.
The small sample size of the residential population and a return of only 25 percent from that pool represents a small number of people. The pieces of the pie graphs presented in the report become much smaller when the 75 percent of the residents who didn't respond is designated as a portion labeled as "no comment/no opinion". Only the "strongly agree/agree" or "strongly disagree/disagree" segments are pictured in the graphs, the pie piece of "no comment/no opinion" is missing.
Extrapolating that the non-responsive residents "don't care" and don't have a "vote" and therefore don't count in the direction that this community should proceed is using the survey to present the viewpoint and achieve the goals of a limited number of individuals and/or special interest groups.
We already have an elected Board of Supervisors, a Planning Commission, a County Administrator, a Commonwealth Attorney, the Board of Zoning Appeals, and a Building Official as governing bodies that represent the people of our District and County. These are the people in whom we have put our trust that the wishes of the majority will be addressed.
