When a one-inch rainfall descends on Clevenger’s Corner, each acre receives 27,154 gallons of water. It weighs 113 tons. It is enough water to fill a swimming pool at a roadside motel. Since Culpeper County, on average, gets 43 inches of precipitation a year, an acre there may receive a little over one million gallons of water a year.
If expanded to cover the area of the Clevenger’s Corner Village Plan, then 2.2 billion gallons of rain, sleet, and snow falls from the sky onto its 1,900 acres in an average year. That is a lot of water and it all has to go somewhere.
Where does it go? With varying seasonal emphasis, precipitation follows four main routes. It evaporates; plant life uses it, it run offs, or it soaks deep into the ground to recharge aquifers and wells.
For example, when high winds prevail, as in the early spring, water evaporates more quickly from lakes, ponds, and the bare earth than at other times. In the spring and summer, precipitation is quickly sucked into the root systems of new and ripening vegetation, and then is “exhaled” back into the sky in the form of water vapor (a tree may “exhale” 50 gallons of water a day into the air).
