opts to retain
retail limitations—
ambiance is
everything
The Washington Town Council just barely followed the Mayor’s lead (by a three-to-two vote), and denied The Inn at Little Washington a spe; cial use permit to expand the retail space limitation - of 1,000 square feet in the recently acquired Mrs. Coxe’s Tavern space. The Mayor suggested that retail limitation has helped retain the Town’s ambiance and quality of life, and that an approval of the requested 1,950 square - feet could lead to a retail space war that would result in an ever more congested village, and that might well be true. The Inn at Little Washington has done much to : establish Washington, Virginia, as a destination, and the vision and foresight of its owners has probably ; been the driving force behind the Town’s reemergence ; as a beautifully well-kept, inviting, and commercially viable weekend and vacation spot, as well as a comfortable place to reside. Could the near doubling of the allowable size of that space radically change that ambiance so careful: ly devised? Could that precedent encourage others to ' apply for similar concessions? Would a nearly 2,000 square foot limit entice The Gap to acquire the bank building and begin the “mollification” of Washington, •Va.? . Could The Inn redevelop its plans so that the - “Mrs. Coxe’s” retail space does not exceed the 1,000 square foot limit?
