A tan is not a sign of good health. It is the result of skin injury. Symptoms of overexposure to the sun include: skin tenderness, pain, swelling and blistering. Additional symptoms like fever, chills, upset stomach and confusion indicate a serious sunburn and require immediate medical attention.
Soaking up the sun’s rays used to be considered healthy, before we learned about the dangers of ultraviolet rays.
These invisible rays, known as ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) , cause suntan, sunburn and skin damage. There is no “safe” UV light.
Protecting children from the sun is especially important when you consider that most of our lifetime exposure occurs before the age of 18. We have all seen toddlers at the beach with rosy cheeks and red shoulders.
And older children with darkly tanned legs and arms. And we’ve seen the older folks with sun spots and freckles completely covering their faces and backs!
All of these skin characteristics can be avoided with proper use of sunscreen, and a good dose of common sense in the sun.
There are three different types of sunscreen formulas: bonding, film, and wax. The base or lotion in which the UV absorbers are mixed with is very important, because it will ultimately determine how well the sunscreen will work.
A Bonding base formula works the best, because it enables the absorbers to interlock with the skin. It does not clog your pores by interlocking tightly to the upper layer of the skin, allowing the skin to breathe and perspire underneath.
Allowing your body to naturally keep cool by sweating is vital in all outdoor activities. Bonding base sunscreens work great in the water, giving you superior protection while swimming or profuse sweating.
