The Washington Tbwn Council has decided against proceeding with the finalization of the preliminary design for the town’s sewage treatment system until additional options are explored for the location of the plant.
Last year the town purchased Avon Hall and planned to locate the system on a portion of its 19 acres, but new opportunities, according to Tov. n Treasurer Jerry Goebel, justify a delay in moving forward with the existing preliminary plan.
At last week’s Tbwn Council meeting, Mr. Goebel initiated the discussion on alternatives to Avon Hall while Mayor Stew Willis was attempting to move the council toward agreement on having Resource International finalize their draft preliminary engineering report.
Both the mayor and council member Alice Butler indicated their preference to proceed, but Mr. Goebel said “there’s something that’s come up that needs to be discussed in closed session.”
Council member Claudia Mitchell shed some light on that “something” when she remarked: “Putting a sewage system at Avon Hall is like putting one on your front porch. There may be other opportunities,” she added.
