Alex Shafran, 12, of Viewtown, leans in close to the ear of nationally-known jazz artist Richie Cole and whispers, “Hey Richie, what song are we playing?”
Mr. Cole, whose 45-year career with his group “Alto Madness” includes stints with Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton, smiles broadly, hums the first riff of Charlie Parker’s famed “Au Privave” and Alex knows just what to do.
This was the scene four weeks ago on the stage of Norfolk’s acclaimed jazz nightclub, Blues Alley, where Alex jammed his heart out on the Yamaha alto saxophone he has been playing for only two years.
