Jack Atkins suggested that the lack of affordability of housing for younger people was impacting the ability of the county’s fire and rescue companies to attract volunteers.
He said that the zoning has “thrown the people who are going to volunteer out of the county” and that the greatest challenge of the next five years was a budget for paid fire and rescue company members unless more volunteers come forth.
J. B. Carter noted that only three of 10 volunteers that he started with in 1979 were “still here.” He said that the others could not afford to live in Rappahannock.
