Charlottesville is home to an active group of Sufi dancers, one of about 200 dance circles in the U.S. They host monthly dances at the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church on the first Wednesday evening of each month as well as large Sufi camps and retreats in the summer.
Dean has been leading dances for the past 10 years. In her professional life, she is a labor relations and conflict resolution consultant who works across the country.
And, of course, no introduction to Sufi dancing is complete without mention of the 13th century Sufi mystic Rumi, who enjoys fame across the world as a great poet and spiritual guide.
