He escaped from slavery after six years and went to France where he studied in the monastery for twelve years. He wished to return to Ireland, to convert the native pagans to Christianity. He became appointed the second Bishop of Ireland.
St. Patrick was quite successful at engaging converts. This was precisely what upset the Celtic Druids. St. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries, schools and churches.
His mission in Ireland lasted for 30 years after which he retired. He died on March 17 in
