Rappahannock finished its third season in convincing manner with its first final four place winner at the state wrestling tournament.
Jeff Scroggins went 5-1 in the tournament to finish third in the state. He opened the tournament against T.J. Steffey from Lebanon.
Leading into the second round, Scroggins took only nine seconds to reverse and pin his opponent. This was Rappahannock’s first pin at the state level.
In the second round, Scroggins lost to the eventual state champion but wrestled his opponent from Matthews in what was considered by most to be the best match in the 171weight class.
Wrestling the third time of the day, Scroggins fought his way back into the hunt for third by beating Colin Smith of Northwood 6-4.
In his first match of day two of the tournament, Scroggins put together solid takedowns with a tremendous five point bottom move late in the third period to beat Dylan DeHart of Radford. This left Scroggins one match away from the consolation finals and the opportunity to be Rappahannock’s first final four wrestler.
